IFS is built on the idea that our mind is made up of multiple parts. Each part has its own unique feelings and perspective, with a specific role to play. The goal of IFS is to acknowledge each one for what it is and approach them with curiosity.

Within this framework, there is also a central being called the Self. This is your true, deep-down identity. The Self is a healthy, compassionate, calm, and capable being that can lead you down a path of healing. IFS therapy can help you dive beneath the surface and connect with your Self so you can learn how to relate to all your inner parts in a more meaningful way.

What Are Your Inner Parts?

IFS identifies three categories of parts. Each one was developed to protect you in its own respective way.

Exiles

Exiles are the more vulnerable parts, often child-like in nature. They carry pain from past experiences, such as shame, fear, loneliness, or grief. These parts are often pushed down in an attempt to suppress the overwhelming emotions.

Managers

Managers are the hard workers. They try to keep the exiles hidden and control situations. They often show up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and overachieving.

Firefighters

Firefighters are reactive. When an exile surfaces and brings feelings of pain, they are quick to respond. They typically drive impulsive behaviors and avoidance. In some instances, they promote substance use to numb the pain.

Healing the Inner Child Through IFS

The inner child is the part of yourself that experienced hurt or neglect as a child. Healing the inner child means pulling all the parts together to operate as one rather than continuing to push them away.

When you have a better understanding of the exiled parts and can approach them without judgment, you can create a meaningful shift. It allows that part to find relief from the pain and start to heal those old wounds. Situations that once triggered you will start to have less of a chokehold. The power comes back to you.

What a Session Looks Like

IFS focuses on what’s happening right now. You will be guided to acknowledge any feelings in your body and explore them with an open mind. As one of the parts emerges, you will work on building a relationship with it, allowing you to connect further with your Self.

During a session, you won’t be forced to talk about anything uncomfortable or revisit past trauma for no clear reason. IFS can help you feel more grounded and self-aware. The inner conflicts that once felt exhausting begin to settle as your parts learn how to work together.
