What Sets Gen Z Teens Apart from Previous Generations?

We’re living in a time of rapid technological advancements and shifting social and cultural norms. The face of these changes is Generation Z.

For those born between 1997 and 2012, they’re experiencing the world unlike any generation before them. They have emerged as a highly influential group, commanding unprecedented changes.

Gen Z has made it possible to redefine certain aspects of life and the expectations that come with them. They have challenged the status quo and offered valuable insight for continuing to shape the future for the better. Here’s a look at some factors that set them apart from their predecessors.

Digital Warriors

This is the first generation to be born well into the digital age. They’ve grown up with smartphones in their hands and internet access for all their needs. Unlike previous generations, they don't know what brick phones and dial-up internet access are like. They certainly don’t know what it’s like not to have either.

Gen Z prefers visual communication, hence the rise in popularity of social media platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. Media is filled with videos that are short, sweet, and to the point. Text content is limited.

Growing up with this skillset being a normal part of learning and development, they have been trained to be pros at multitasking and switching between digital platforms quickly. They can easily go from social media platforms to emails to text messages and back to social media within seconds.

Socially Conscious

This generation is more aware of important social issues like mental health, climate change, gender equality, and racial justice. They're not afraid to be vocal and activism comes as second nature. Where previous generations have had social activists, this generation has made movements out of each of these issues, largely due to the digital advances and wide reach.

Gen Z is also a driving force for diversity and inclusion. They command diversity and equality in the workplace, encourage it in politics, and spread the word across various media platforms.

Mental Health Champions

More awareness and understanding have been brought to light in the mental health realm. Standing behind that movement is this generation at large.

They’ve helped make mental health a priority and are vocal about doing what it takes to achieve it. They’re more willing to talk openly about any ongoing personal struggles and seek help when necessary. It’s even common to see their journeys placed on social media platforms for others to follow along.

Culturally Fluid

While this subject has started brewing with other generations, gen Z has demonstrated comfort in being culturally fluid. They blend identities and naturally navigate multiple cultural influences. They do so without any feelings of guilt or shame.

No knock to previous generations, there’s just been a greater exposure to global trends and perspectives thanks to their lifelong use of internet and access to global media. The digital age has helped form a broader international worldview.

Shifted Career Focuses

Millennials may have started the hustle and grind mentality, but gen Z has taken that and transformed it into something more entrepreneurial. Millennials have needed it to make ends meet, or more out of necessity than fun.

Gen Z has taken an interest in starting side hustles and freelancing in their area of interest. They’re starting their own businesses and capitalizing on the social media platforms.

This generation is still earning college degrees, but they’re also shifting focus to practical skills and online learning.

Increased Depression and Anxiety

This generation has been raised and taught by the generations before. The internet has played a huge role in shaping perspectives, priorities, and how they navigate their world.

Because of this digital norm, however, many have faced increased pressure and anxiety. Stress and depression are at all-time highs. As much as this is an accepted fact, it shouldn’t be considered normal. Teen counseling is more accessible than ever before. Contact us to start your path to healing.
